A midlands senator is chairing the committee.
The government needs a new approach on how to support autistic adults and children.
That's according to Longford senator Micheál Carrigy, who will chair the first meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism today.
The group will meet the National Council for Special Education to discuss plans for school places for autistic children, followed by a meeting with Special Education Minister Josepha Madigan and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation, and Junior Disability Minister Anne Rabbitte and As I Am the following week.
