There are no 'older-age' acute mental health beds in the Midlands.
A report by the Mental Health Commission has found that no where in the country has the recommended amount but 19 counties including Laois, Offaly and Westmeath are without any.
It's recommended the provision of 127 older age beds nationwide, but currently there are just 56.
Author of the report Dr Margo Wrigley says different age groups tend to need different types of cares.
People suffering with their mental health are ending up in hospital unnecessarily, according to Mental Health Reform.
The organisation is calling for action after a new report highlighted how there is a severe lack of community based mental health supports, such as crisis houses.
As a result some patients who don't need to be admitted have no other option if they want to be treated.
