This initiative aims to empower people to participate in sustainable gardening.
A new seed library is being launched in the midlands.
Laois County Council is opening the Portlaoise Seed Library, which is designed to help residents borrow, grow and return seeds while supporting local biodiversity.
This initiative aims to empower people of all ages to participate in sustainable gardening and promotes heritage seed varieties that thrive in local conditions.
The Seed Library will be hosted by Portlaoise Library and operates on a simple “borrow- grow - return” model. Library members can take seeds free of charge, grow them at home or in shared spaces, and return saved seeds at the end of the season.
The seed library will offer a range of vegetables, herbs and pollinator-friendly native flowers and ornamentals selected to encourage biodiversity and people’s connection to nature. As interest in sustainable living and food security rises, the Seed Library aims to make growing accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
“This Seed Library is about more than planting seeds - it’s about nurturing a love for the outdoors through gardening and peer to peer learning,” said Lisa Doyle, Biodiversity Officer at Laois County Council. “By sharing seeds and knowledge, we’re helping to preserve local varieties, support biodiversity, and strengthen our community’s connection to the natural world.”
The launch event will take place on Noon on 7th March 2026 at Portlaoise Library, featuring activities for children on the day.
The Seed Library complements ongoing efforts to protect local biodiversity and promote environmentally conscious living.
