Offaly County Council Could Create Register Of Flooded Areas

It's hoped the measure would help to prevent flooding in the future.

Offaly County Council is exploring the possibility of compiling a register of recurring flooding areas to prevent or reduce future flooding in the county.  

In an emergency meeting of the council, funding for damage to bridges and roads was discussed, as well as rehabilitation of Bord na Móna bogs.

Fine Gael's John Clendennan believes high risk areas like Banagher and Shannonbridge need to be monitored more closely.

He says the local authority has been working hard to protect people from the immediate danger of flooding, but a plan needs to be made to combat this recurring issue in the long-term:

Farmer Michael Silke says 120 acres of his land on the Offaly/Galway border is under water.

And Mr Silke, the chairman of the Mid-Shannon Flood Relief Group, says the problem remains widespread:
