367 people in the Midlands have been claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for at least five years.
A Midlands TD is expressing her concern over thousands of older workers in the region on long term unemployment benefit.
Independent rep for Offaly Carol Nolan is pointing to Department of Welfare figures which show 1,367 people across the Midlands are receiving the jobseekers allowance for at least the past five years.
427 people are getting the payment in Westmeath, 357 in Offaly, 355 in Laois and 258 in Longford, with the highest age range across the country being 60 or older.
Nationally, 62% of the 10,000 people on continuous jobseeker support are over the age of 45.
Deputy Nolan wants the Government to undertake detailed review of long-term unemployment among older age groups.
