This comes following the rejection of 67 new homes proposal.
A new padel court is expected in the midlands.
That is according to councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley who says a recreational facility could still be built where 67 homes were supposed to be built in Tyrellsland.
Her comments come as An Coimisiún Pleanála rejecting the idea for a housing development which was proposed for Tyrellsland in Portlaoise.
The project was an attempt to meet the housing demand in Portlaoise and the wider county.
A 25-acre site on the Stradbally Road in Tyrellsland was bought by Laois County council in 2021 for €1.4 million.
Reasons such as structural issues, heritage elements, trees and more were highlighted as issues which ultimately lead to the application not being successful.
Cllr Dwane Stanley says Laois county council have got the go ahead for the new sports facility.
The sports facility was originally proposed for beside the housing development.
The council has been informed this week that there have been no issues with that application.
Therefore, the facility will go ahead, with the idea of a padel court in favour of councillors and residents.
Caoithealreach of Portlaoise municipal district, councillor Barry Walsh welcomed the idea saying, coming from a sporting background himself, he enjoys the idea of getting people outside and exercising.
Cllr Walsh also acknowledged how the sporting facility may attract more people to the area.
