Private security firms should be hired to deal with staff shortages in Dublin Airport - not the army.

That's the view of midlands TD and former army ranger, Cathal Berry, who's hit out at the decision to put soldiers on standby as "inappropriate".

The DAA says the contingency plan will only be triggered if absenteeism in airport security reaches over 20 per cent.

The Independent Kildare-South TD says the Defence Forces are the ones in crisis with staffing levels down to just 8,300:
