'Rent-A-Room' Scheme Extended To Council Tenants

The government hopes the scheme will house up to 28,000.

Council tenants can soon avail of the rent-a-room scheme, under new plans agreed by cabinet.

According to the Irish Independent, the government hopes the move will house between 14 and 28,000 people.

Under the current rent-a-room scheme, homeowners can earn up to €14,000 a year tax free, for letting a room in their property.

Once extended, the government hopes some 28,000 council tenants living in 'under occupied' homes will avail of the scheme.

But Dublin City councillor Mannix Flynn doesn't believe people will choose to rent a room in a local authority home:
