A Westmeath Councillor is also calling for CCTV to be introduced.
Westmeath County Council is being urged to install new lighting along parts of the Royal Canal, as some areas are unsafe to pass through.
Councillor Bill Collentine says sections of the walkway are very dark, and are in need of new lights and damaged lighting to be fixed.
The issue has been reported to the Public Lighting Contractor for further examination.
The Fianna Fáil rep is also calling for CCTV to be introduced in such areas as well as the town park.
