RSA Data Shows Offaly Had Safest Roads For Cycling

They took a deep dive of data between 2006 and 2018.

More than a thousand cyclists were injured in 2018, with most of those happening during the morning and evening rush hours.

Figures released by the Road Safety Authority also show Offaly had the safest roads for cyclists two years previously.

1,056 cyclists were injured in 2018 according to the figures from the Road Safety Authority.

The organisation is looking at data from 2006 to 2018, the highlight of which shows Offaly had the lowest percentage of cyclist injuries in the Midlands in 2016.

5% of road users injured in collisions in the Faithful county that year was a cyclist.

This is just below Laois and Westmeath, where 8% of those hurt were on bikes.

Almost 1 in 6 collisions throughout the country that year occurred on rural roads.

The data shows crashes happen most often during commuting periods, that's eight and 9 in the morning and between 5 and 7 in the evening.

In response, The Road Safety Authority is calling for more investment in cycling infrastructure, and more speed limits in rural areas.
