Solar flares are strong energy blasts from the sun.

A line of satellites halfway between the Sun and Earth is the planets only defence against solar flares.

That's according to the Midlands Astronomy Club.

A flare has been released from the sun at around 1:40pm yesterday Irish time according to NASA.

Solar flares are strong blasts of energy from the sun that can cause danger to life and damage infrastructure.

Seanie Morris from the Midlands Astronomy Club says keeping an eye on satellite data will give the best indication:
