Schools Need To "Consider Alternatives" To Large Gatherings

That comes from a former midlands principal, as concerns have been raised about school assemblies.

Schools should consider alternatives to holding large gatherings for the forseeable future.

That's the advice from John Irwin, General Secretary of the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools and former principal of Gallen Community School in Ferbane.

It comes after a Carlow school held an assembly yesterday for first year students, separated by one metre.

Mr. Irwin says they're advising school management to avoid all large gatherings:

The HSE says responding to outbreaks in schools will be its key focus in the coming weeks and months. 

It's told the Covid Response Committee that research shows child to child transmission in a school setting is relatively low. 

Schools that have a suspected case will be individually assessed to decide the best course of action. 

It comes as schools around the country slowly start to reopen this week for the first time since March.
