Teachers' Union Warning Of Economic Downturn If Pay Discrimination Isn't Ended

They're urging members to vote against the latest public pay deal.

The Teachers' Union of Ireland is warning of an economic downturn over the next decade if there's no end to pay discrimination in the education system. 

It's general secretary, Tullamore's Michael Gillespie says those with transferable skills aren't entering the profession and that'll cause a shortage of educators in a range of subjects. 

They're recommending that members do not support the latest public sector pay deal during a ballot in January. 

Mr. Gillespie says what's being proposed doesn't go far enough to addressing the issue:
