‘Unprecedented’ Road Repairs Underway On R400 In Offaly As Pilot Scheme Begins

The aim is for the road works to be complete halfway through November.

Unprecedented Road Repairs Are Taking Place In The Midlands.

That's according to the Cathaoirleach of Edenderry Municipal District, who says the situation surrounding the repair works on the R400 is unusual.

During the most recent Edenderry Municipal District meeting, an update was given on the repair works, with an indication of a completion date.

All going to plan, the R400 is expected to be complete by the middle of November.

The restoration works are part of a pilot scheme affecting the road from Rhode to Rochfortbridge.

Diversion routes have been set up, taking motorists straight into the neighbouring county.

The alternative route bypasses Rhode and goes straight to Tyrrellspass in County Westmeath.

Councillor Claire Murray says this situation has not happened in Offaly before.

As this is the third consecutive year the R400 has been closed for restoration works, residents are heavily affected.

Councillor Murray acknowledged the "personal costs" people may face when maintaining their cars, as the diversion routes can often involve poor-quality roads.

Furthermore, some local school buses now have an additional 40 minutes added to their morning commute.

However, the Sinn Féin representative highlighted how businesses are significantly affected, with the ongoing works disrupting their everyday trade.

Councillor Murray believes the diversions, which bypass local businesses, can contribute to disruption for businesses:

As a result, Offaly County Council has started profiling local businesses for promotion and will be erecting signs to inform people that businesses in Rhode village are still open.
