The works are expected to be completed next year.
A new 1.2 million euro Garda Water Unit is being opened in Westmeath.
The unit is involved in investigations relating to murders, serious crime, missing persons and evidence recovery.
Currently, it's based in Athlone Garda Station, with its equipment located elsewhere.
The funding is now going towards a single, fit for purpose facility.
The works are being carried out by Athlone company Pat Daly Contractors Ltd. - and are expected be completed by mid-2020.
