The Dysart River Project in Westmeath has been named Ireland’s Greenest Community 2025.
The initiative tackled long-standing water pollution in Lough Ennell, where the bathing area at Lilliput once failed to meet quality standards.
Local farmers, the Trout Preservation Association, scientists, Teagasc and community groups worked together to restore the lake, which last year was reclassified as achieving good water quality.
The project was praised by judges as an example of what can be achieved when communities pull together.
The overall Ireland’s Greenest Place award went to the Dingle Peninsula, while Skerries in Dublin, Inagh in Clare and Dún Laoghaire in Dublin took the other category wins.
