Westmeath Older Persons Council Holds AGM

The annual event took place at the Bloomfield House Hotel.

The older population across the Midlands is continuing to grow.

Recent figures show that 14,000 people over the age of 65 now reside in Ireland. These statistics highlight the need for greater community support and inclusion.

That's according to Anne Drury, chair of the Westmeath Older Persons Council, who recently addressed members at the council's AGM in Mullingar.

The annual event took place at the Bloomfield House Hotel, bringing together council members and representatives from associated organisations.

Ms Drury says it is vital that older people feel included in their communities, particularly given the growing older population across the Midlands.

She says events like the AGM provide an important opportunity for members to come together, strengthen relationships and share their experiences.

The AGM also highlighted the work needed across Westmeath, as outlined in the county's Age Friendly Strategy for 2025 to 2028.

During the event, members received updates on completed projects, key highlights and achievements from the past year, showcasing the important work the organisation is carrying out across the county.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to reflect on progress so far and discuss initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for older people, ensuring their needs remain a priority within local communities.

Mr Drury says events like the AGM provide an important opportunity for members to come together, strengthen relationships and share their experiences:
