A Westmeath walking group is warning of the environmental damage being caused by wind turbines.
Rahanine Trailblazers say it has lost access to bog walking routes near Rochfortbridge because BnM won't grant them permission.
Chair of the group, Mary Fallon says the Derrygrenagh Wind and Solar Project, which will see the installation of 25 wind turbines over 2,000 hectares in the region, will result in loss of wildlife and destroy the bogs.
Ms Fallon says once the turbines are put in, the damage can't be reversed:

"BnM is continuing to progress the design of the proposed Derrygreenagh Wind and Solar Project. An extensive public consultation programme was undertaken during Autumn and Winter 2025, and the feedback received from local residents, community groups and other stakeholders is being considered alongside the project’s technical, environmental and engineering assessments.
BnM is also developing a draft amenity plan and is reviewing proposals submitted by local representatives, including the Rahaine Bog Trailblazers, to identify opportunities for accessible recreational amenities. While BnM recognises the community’s interest in accessing these lands, they remain operational lands and are not open to unrestricted public access. BnM will continue to engage with the local community as the project progresses."
