Giddeon Tetteh provided plenty of cut and thrust for Town in the first half.
Athlone Town had to settle for a share of the spoils in Lissywollen on Friday night after their meeting with UCD.
The home side raced in to a 2-0 lead thanks in large part to Giddeon Tetteh.
The former Shamrock Rovers winger finished a fine move in the opening minutes to give Athlone the lead.
That lead was then doubled after fine work from Tetteh down the left wing made space for a cut back finished off by Aaron Connolly.
Mickey McCullagh responded for the students almost immediately to make it 2-1.
UCD grabbed the equaliser with just 11 minutes of normal time left on the clock through a Mikey Raggett header.
The Dublin side stay second in the standings, with Athlone, now unbeaten in 8 games, in third.
Both Tetteh and and Connolly have been named in the League's team of the week for their performances on Friday:
