Cervical Check says it has caught up on the backlog of screening appointments caused by Covid-19.

As part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, the service is urging anyone invited for, or due for their smear test, to make an appointment as soon as possible.

Figures from the National Cancer Registry show, that since 2008, the number of people diagnosed with cervical cancer has decreased each year.

Dr. Sarah Fitzgibbon is a clinical adviser with Cervical Check.

She says the number of smears carried out in 2021 increased, as women attended appointments they may have missed during the pandemic in 2020:
