Culture Hunters Treating Heritage Week Like Gig-Going Festival

"A Walk Back in Time: Discovering Kilcormac's Pieta" takes place in the village this evening.

Heritage officers across the Midlands are celebrating a growing appetite for history across the region.

Heritage Week is being treated more and more like a culture festival as the years go by.

That's according to Midlands hertiage officers as the 2026 programme moves into its fourth day of events.

This week, there's a guided visit of Mountmellick Masonic Lodge Friday and Saturday in Laois.

In Westmeath on Thursday oral historian, Thomás McNamara will be bringing people on a listening journey about life on the Shannon and on Lough Ree in Athlone Library.

While in Offaly "A Walk Back In Time" explores the history of the medieval of the Kilcormac Pieta and takes place at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Kilcormac this evening.

The county's heritage officer is Amanda Pedlow, she says the programme for each county is now like a list of must-see gigs:
