Water Safety is appealing for people consuming alcohol this St. Patrick's Day to stay away from waterways.
There are ten drownings in Ireland every month, including alcohol being a contributory factor in one third of these.
The organisation is reminding people to check tide times in advance when walking and to carry a charged phone incase of an emergency.
They stress to those boating and angling, that alcohol would still be significantly impaired the next day, and urge people to always wear a lifejacket.
Open water swimmers are also cautioned to keep swims short and warm up quickly afterwards, to prevent cold shock and hypothermia.
