Four Midlands Motorists Caught Speeding During National Slow Down Day

Over 140,000 vehicles were checked during the 24-hour Garda operation.

National Slow Down Day has come to a close.

Over 140,000 vehicles were checked between 7am yesterday and 7am this morning - and 211 were found speeding.

In Westmeath, two motorists have been caught speeding on the M6 at Tyrellspass.

One was clocked at 149kmph while the other was travelling at 138kmph in a 120kmph zone

Another was detected travelling at 141km/h in a 120km/h Zone on the M6 between Kilcurley and Moate in Offaly.

Gardaí clocked another going 105km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the R356 at Tonlemone, Banagher in Offaly.

The number of lives lost on the roads increased last year, to 157 deaths, the highest number recorded since 2016.

So far this year there have been 52 deaths on our roads.

It's estimated 30% of road deaths are a direct result of speeding.

The operation ends today, but Gardai continue to appeal to drivers to slow down and comply with speed limits, to help reduce the number of speed related collisions on our roads
