1,500 hectares of bog in Offaly, Laois and Westmeath will be targetted.
Bord na Móna is to transform former peat production land in the midlands into native woodland over the next 3 year.
1,500 hectares of bog, no longer used for peat production, will be initially targeted in Offaly, Laois, Westmeath, and Tipperary with at least 600,000 new trees planted.
The semi state company will work with Coillte Nature on the new project to provide the management, forestry, nursery and technical expertise to establish and maintain the woodlands.
Its part of their extensive peatland rehabilitation and bog restoration programme that will see a total of 35,000 hectares of peatland rehabilitated by 2025.
It comes after week when unions claim up to 2,000 jobs are in immediate danger at the company.
