Biodiversity Week Events To Take Place Across Laois, Offaly And Westmeath

Many different events will be occurring across the midlands over the next seven days.

Birdsong,  bat walks and Bee festivals - that's  just some of the events on offer for this year's Biodiversity week.

The local authorites of Offaly, Laois and Westmeath will both inform and entertain families across the region in a celebration of local wildlive from today until Sunday, May 24th.

In Offaly, highlights include a talk on The Peregrine Falcons of Tullamore by the local authority's Biodiversity Officer Ricky Whelan.

That takes place at Tullamore Parish Centre at 6pm on Wedensday May 20th.

The Blundell Bat House in Edenderry will also have its official opening, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:30pm on Thursday, May 21st.

Laois has its fair share of events with a dusk chorus in Ballylynan from 8 to 9pm on Friday May 22nd, where walkers can watch the sunset, and listen how birds use sounds to communicate with each other.

Bat Conservation Ireland will host a bat walk in Abbeyleix, starting at the Church of Ireland at 9:30pm tomorrow night.

It will start with observing the creatures in the belfry, and will also give people a change to learn about their role in maintaining ecological balance.

Westmeath kicks things off with their Bog Lab and Zine Workshop at the Bog Bothy in Milltownpass tomorrow at 11am.

Other events include a Greenway Bee Pollinator Festival along the Old Rail Trail from 10am on Friday, May 22nd, and a workshop on the future of Irish Butterflies at Belvedere House on May 23rd.
