The local authority wants to make it a focal point for the town.
It's hoped the pedestrianisation of a busy midlands street will help local businesses flourish.
Laois County Council has now banned traffic from Main Street, Portlaoise every day between the hours of 11am and 5.30pm until August 30th.
Director of Services Simon Walton says they're hoping to make the street a focal point for shoppers and offer a totally covid-compliant space.
The outdoor licence fee has been waived for 2020, to let businesses around the county avail of more space, while adhering to social distancing.
Mr. Walton says it's a trial exercise that will be reviewed on an ongoing basis:
