Call For Change To "Outrageous" Ban On Turf Cutting In The Midlands

Peat cannot be harvested on Bord na Móna land greater than 30 acres.

The government is being asked to row back on a ban on turf cutting on Bord na Móna bogs in the midlands.

Laois-Offaly TD Brian Stanley says the High Court has ruled that peat cannot be harvested commercially or for domestic fuel on Bord na Móna land exceeding 30 acres. 

The Sinn Féin deputy says it's outrageous that midlands communities are being denied work and a source of fuel for homes.

Speaking in the Dáil this evening, he asked the government to contact An Bord Pleanála and have the decision amended:
