Call For Gender Quotas To Be Introduced For Local Elections

One of the midlands nine female councillors is making the appeal.

A midlands councillor is calling for gender quotas to be introduced before the next local elections in 2024.

Louise Heavin of the Green Party feels council chambers should be more reflective of the population.

At the moment, just nine of the midlands' 58 councillors are women.

Minister of State for Local Government, Peter Burke, advocacy group See Her Elected, and the National Women's Council are being invited to discuss the matter with Westmeath County Council.

Councillor Heavin says her suggestions got a mixed reception from her male colleagues:
