Solemn Vespers for Fr Willie Doyle will be celebrated this Sunday in Mullingar’s Cathedral of Christ the King.
The cause for the canonisation of a First World War chaplain is set to advance to the Roman phase.
Fr Willie Doyle SJ entered the Jesuits at Rahan in Offaly, in the Diocese of Meath in 1891, before going on to serve as a military chaplain to the 16th Irish Division during the First World War.
He was killed in August 1917 while tending to wounded soldiers on the battlefield.
Solemn Vespers will be celebrated at 4pm this Sunday in Mullingar’s Cathedral of Christ the King to mark the conclusion of the diocesan phase of the cause.
Priest of the Diocese of Meath and postulator for the cause, Fr John Hogan says he had a unique way of preparing soldiers for their deaths:
