Commercial Vacancies Rise In Westmeath And Offaly While Laois Records Country’s Largest Drop

The latest figures for the second quarter of 2019, show 28 thousand commercial units in Ireland are empty.

A new report, published by GeoDirectory, Ireland's address database, shows the commercial vacancy rate in Offaly and Westmeath  has increased, compared to this time last year.

Edenderry not only had the highest rate for Offaly, but also tops the list for the entire country at 29 per cent.

Birr has the county's lowest figure at 16 per cent. 

Athlone has the highest number of commercial vacancies in the Lake County at 19 per cent, while Moate has the lowest at 13 per cent.

Laois recorded the country's highest decrease.

Portarlington, at 18 per cent, has the highest commercial vacancy rate in the, while Portlaoise has the lowest at 15 per cent.

Nationally, the commercial vacancy rate has risen to 13 per cent in the last three months, an increase of 0.2 percentage points on the second quarter of 2018.

Almost 11 per cent of all commercial properties in the midlands are involved in the accomodation and food services sector.
