Coronavirus: Another 25 People Have Died In The Republic

Latest figures:

Another 25 people with COVID-19 have died in the Republic, while another 343 new cases linked to the virus have been confirmed.

The death toll now stands at 1,286 while there have been a total of 21,176 confirmed cases.

The figures, published by the National Public Health Emergency team show that as of Thursday evening, the median age of all cases of Covid 19 recorded in the Republic is 49 while the number hospitalised as a result of the virus is 2,785....representing 13% of cases.

58% of cases of the virus presented in women while 42% were in men.

There are 230 cases in Laois, Offaly has 293 people diagnosed with the illness and 500 confirmed cases in Westmeath. 

Of those hospitalised, some 368 had been admitted to intensive care, while as of last night, there were 99 people in ICU... that's the first time the figure has been below 100 in more than a month.

In total, 5,973 cases of the diseases are associated with healthcare workers while community transmission accounts for 63 per cent of cases.

Masks:

The Chief Medical Officer says people could soon be asked to wear face coverings in some shops and on public transport.

Tony Holohan has urged people not to rush out and buy surgical masks so the supply for frontline healthcare workers is protected.

But he says face coverings could be recommended when restrictions are eased:

Older people:

There's a call on the Government to consult with older people before making decisions on the coronavirus restrictions.

Age Action's welcoming it's move to allow over 70s who are cocooning outdoors to exercise from Tuesday.

CEO Paddy Connolly says the restrictions have been very challenging for older people who are usually very involved in their community:

Pubs:

A group representing pub owners is questioning the decision to allow restaurants open six weeks before bars and pubs.

It's part of government's plans to ease restrictions and reopen the economy over five stages.

The Licensed Vintners Association says the move's treating the sector like second class citizens.

Restrictions:

Coronavirus restrictions will start to be eased in two weeks - with garden centres, repair shops and construction sites re-opening.

The first in a five-stage plan will also see small groups of friends allowed to meet up outdoors from May 18th.

It'll be July before creches can re-open for all workers - and cinemas, gyms and nightclubs will stay shut until August.

From Tuesday, people will be allowed to exercise up to 5 kilometres from their home and older 70s can also go outside to exercise.

A further 34 people with Covid 19 have died in the Republic.

The Department of Health has also confirmed 221 new cases.

The death toll in the Republic has now risen to 1,265.

And there are a total of 20,833 confirmed cases.

Dublin accounts for half of them, followed by Kildare and Cork with six per cent each.

The midlands has almost 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.  

Westmeath has 487, with the total in Offaly standing at 284. 

Meanwhile, there are 224 people in Laois with the illness. 

The latest figures show over 5,800 healthcare workers have contracted coronavirus.

The Department of Health says 367 people have been admitted to an intensive care unit so far.

The latest HSE figures as of last night show 105 people are currently being treated in an ICU.
