Councillor Questions Council Decision On Fleadh Anniversary

Mullingar rep Denis Leonard wants a plaque erected in the town.

Councillors in the Midlands are unhappy with the limited plans to mark the 75th anniversary of the Fleadh Cheoil.

That's according to Cllr Denis Leonard, who represents Mullingar, where the first-ever fleadh was held.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann recently sought to mark the occasion, with the idea of erecting a plaque in the town.

The local representative recently put forward a motion to have a plaque erected in Market Square.

He says it is the most suitable location, as it was the original starting point of the Fleadh Cheoil 75 years ago.

He believes the town deserves greater recognition for its place in the event's history, acknowledging how big the competition has become, with attendees travelling from all around the world.

However, his proposal did not receive a supportive response from the council executive in the Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District.

One issue highlighted was that the building in Market Square is a protected structure.

The council suggested that Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann could place the plaque on a temporary plinth on the day of the anniversary celebrations.

Furthermore, they suggested Áras an Mhuilinn as a permanent location for the plaque.

However, Cllr Leonard highlighted that Áras an Mhuilinn is also a protected structure, and believes Market Square remains the most appropriate location.
