A Westmeath town saw a drop of 11%.
There has been an overall decrease in the number of properties available to rent in the midlands, according to a new report.
The Simon Community's Locked Out of the Market report for December 2024 looked at two midlands towns, Athlone and Portlaoise.
Compared to the third quarter of the year, in Athlone there was an 11% drop, one of only two towns examined to see a decline in the number of rent dwellings, while in Portlaoise there was no change.
Neither town had any properties priced within the Housing Assistance Payment scheme in any category.
The largest increase in any town in the report was 190 per cent in Waterford City Centre, bringing the total homes to rent in the area at the end of 2024 to 29.
