It comes following the findings of an EPA report.
The EPA and the local authorities need staffing resources to help solve issues of peat extraction.
That's according to Westmeath Councillor Liam McDaniel following the latest Environmental Protection Agency report.
The EPA carried out 170 enforcement inspections between 2021 and 2024 and taken legal actions at District Court and High Court level against operations on areas greater than 50 hectares.
They are directing local authorities to take appropriate enforcement actions against these operations within their jurisdiction.
