Frustration Grows Among Staff At Offaly Peat Briquette Factory

Those in Derrinlough believe Just Transition is being rushed.

Fear and frustration is growing among staff over the impending closure of Bord na Móna’s peat briquette factory in Offaly.

The company permanently ceased all peat harvesting in February, but says there’s enough in stock to continue operations at Derrinlough until 2024.

However, workers on the ground say current peat levels suggest closure is more likely in the next 12 to 18 months.
