Funding Of Over €890,000 Given To Midlands Heritage Projects

€9m is being distributed among over 600 projects across the country.

Nationally €9m has been funded through the Historic Structures Fund and Built Heritage Investment Scheme for over 600 initiatives in Ireland.

In Offaly, some of the €442,000 allocated to the county will go towards to restoring wooden, metal, and lead windows in Birr Castle inner courtyard that date from 1660 to 1870. Tullamore Presbyterian Church is to benefit by €150,000 to cover roof, and ceiling repairs and other works. And €30,000 will go to Luker's Public House in Shannonbridge for works, which include repairs to the shop front, and renovating timer sash windows.

Just over €280,000 is going to projects in Westmeath. €100,000 of that has been allocated  to Belvedere House in Mullingar for masonary reapirs and rebuilding of the retaining walls of the battery enclosure are among the repairs to be carried out. Meanwhile, Laois has been grated €171,000.

Vicarstown Old National School will get a face lift to the tune of €35,000 and the Fisherman's Inn, Ballybrittas and the Thatched Cottage, Garrymore, Mountmellick are getting funding for their thatched roofs.

Newtown Mill

Roof repairs are required to halt water ingress and damage to the mill.


Vicarstown Old National School

Repairs and repointing of brickwork using Irish wigging technique. Repair and re-painting of the decorative timber bargeboards. Repairs and replacement of rainwater goods.


Woodbrook House

Emergency rendering works to the original front portion of the building


Offaly - €305,825

St. Kieran's Church, Birr

External and internal fabric repairs, including rainwater goods, stone, plaster and pointing. Repairs to bell cradle and stained glass and stone medieval east window.


Birr Castle

Restore the diverse range of wooden, metal, and lead windows in the Castle inner courtyard that date from 1660 to 1870.


St. Mary's Church, Edenderry

Repairs to roof to stop water ingress which is causing damage to internal plaster and decorations.


Tullamore Presbyterian Church

Roof, rainwater goods & internal ceiling repairs. Defective external & internal plaster repairs with new lime plaster. Renewal of flashings at abutments and parapets Window repairs.


Skehanagh, Belmont

Rebuilding collapsed stone walls & windows, stabilizing structure and re-pointing.


Luker's Public House, Shannonbridge

Underpinning, support, repairs to shop front, roof, and re-plaster front of building. Renovation of timber sash windows, as well as fascia, soffit and rainwater goods.


Westmeath - €150,000

No.1 Athlone Gun Battery

Clearing of brambles and undergrowth to the northern section of the battery enclosure down to the original ground surface. Laying of grass sod to battery enclosure and limestone round pebbles to northern gun platform. Masonry repairs and rebuilding of the retaining walls of the battery enclosure.


Belvedere House, Mullingar

Rake out and replace the hard cement strap pointing to the front and side elevations of the house, to repair the windows included in the same stonework area, to install new steel support to the floor joists of the first level end rooms.
