The person, who was in custody at the time, was found dead yesterday.
The Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and the Gardai are investigating the circumstances that led to the death.
Statement from the Irish Prison Service:
"The Irish Prison Service can confirm that there was a death of a person in custody at Midlands Prison on 1st April 2026.
All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant. The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office.
The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends."
