The Irish Penal Reform Trust is slamming recent inspection reports.
The government's being urged to take immediate steps to improve conditions in the country's prisons.
It follows the publication of damning inspection reports relating to a number of facilities.
The Irish Penal Reform Trust say the findings highlight poor prison conditions, mistreatment of prisoners , poor relationships between staff and inmates and inconsistencies in discipline.
Overcrowding also continues in Laois prisons, with Portlaoise Prison operating at 137% capacity and Midlands Prison at 121% today.
