The government is defending waiting a week to tell Leaving Cert students there was a problem with the predictive grades system.

Minister Eamon Ryan has said they first needed to establish the extent of the problem so they could properly deal with it. 

The department first learnt there was a problem last Tuesday, and about a third of the cabinet was made aware last Friday.
