New figures from the CSO breakdown people's movements.
More than half of residents in the midlands were still moving outside of their 10km radius in the lead up to Christmas.
New figures from the CSO show that only 43% of people in Laois were staying local, it was 45% in Offaly and 49% in Westmeath.
However all three counties recorded an increase in the numbers staying in their homes between Christmas Day and New Years Eve.
Offaly had the third highest jump in the county at 10.2%, an extra 9% stayed at home in Laois and 8% in Westmeath.
It still means that 4 in 10 people in the region failed to abide by covid-19 guidelines during the festive period.
