Michael D Higgins' term as president has come to an end after 14 years.
A Midlands historian and lecturer says the use of Áras an Uachtaráin's social media helped Michael D.Higgins's broad appeal.
His 14 year term in office ended at midnight, as Catherine Connolly takes up the mantle as Ireland's 10th president today.
Carlow College's Ida Milne has met the former president a number of times, having worked with him during historical commemorations and at a reception in honour of her book on the Spanish flu.
