53 raised bogs in Ireland are designated as SACs, and a ban on turf harvesting was put in place in 2011.

Illegal turf harvesting is still taking place, despite a ban which has been in place for 12 years.

Figures released by the Irish Wildlife Trust have found 330 plots were cut from Special Areas of Conservation in 2022.
