Independent Westmeath Rep Backs Tanaiste's Derelict Site Levy

John Gibbons says he'd accept the government stepping in to collect the tax.

A Westmeath councillor feels a proposed derelict property tax could be enough incentive to get more properties on the register.

It follows criticism from Tanaiste Simon Harris this week that local authorities are not doing enough to enforce the current measures.

The new tax would be collected by Revenue, and will apply at first to towns and cities with a population of more than 4,000 people.
