He was moved to a padded cell.
A prisoner who died in the Midlands Prison in Laois had known psychiatric issues and was serving a sentence for dangerous driving and assault.
46 year old man Colm Connolly passed away in a padded cell in the Portlaoise facility shortly after being restrained by prison officers.
Reports indicate Mr Connolly was involved in an altercation in his own cell on Wednesday, before throwing items at officers which included a cup of his own urine.
He was then moved to the padded cell where he was found unresponsive.
Gardaí, along with the Irish Prison Service, and the Office of the Inspector of Prisons are conducting their own separate investigations.
Mr Connolly will be laid to rest tomorrow at 12 noon in St. Catherine's Church, Murrintown in Wexford.
