Irish Rail Unveils Two Major Projects To Tackle Overcrowding On Midlands Routes

Irish Rail added two extra services in 2024, but they are now at full capacity.

Irish Rail are rolling out two major projects to tackle overcrowding on Midlands routes.

Currently, routes through Tullamore are at full capacity following increasing demand for the service.

This follows Irish Rail expanding its services by adding two additional services in 2024, which are now at full capacity again.

Deputy Corporate Communications Manager Jane Cregan highlighted the growing number of people working in hybrid jobs and commuting to areas such as Dublin or Galway a couple of times a week.

In turn, this is putting increased demand on Irish Rail as residents of Tullamore increasingly commute to work.

Now, an alternative approach is being taken with two major projects: the Galway Capacity Enhancement Scheme and the DART+ Fleet Programme.

The Galway Capacity Enhancement Scheme aims to increase train frequency and passenger capacity through rail infrastructure improvements.

The line has stops in Athlone, Clara, Tullamore, and Portarlington.

Every stage of the Galway Capacity Enhancement Scheme is expected to be fully completed by 2030.

Meanwhile, the DART+ Fleet Programme plans to deliver up to 750 electric and battery-electric carriages over a 10-year period.

The programme aims to enter commercial service starting in 2027.

Ms Cregan said the initiatives will help provide additional capacity and address growing demand for rail services.

With routes through Tullamore already at full capacity, these projects could help accommodate the increasing number of passengers relying on Irish Rail while hybrid working continues to make commuting more practical for people living in the Midlands.
