Jadotville Monument Being Unveiled In Westmeath

The event takes place at 11am in Mullingar.

A monument commerating the story of a Westmeath town and the siege of Jadotville is being unveiled today.

156 Irish troops acted as peacekeepers in the Congo in 1961, with many coming from Mullingar.

The piece will be stationed outside Columb Barracks, and is the second one in the county alongside one outside Athlone's Custume Barracks.

Local historian and teacher Jason McKevitt is speaking at the event this morning.

He says his own connection to the siege is a personal one:
