The judicial system is 'too lax' on criminals.

That's according to Westmeath councillor Andrew Duncan following recent incidents in Mullingar.

Gardaí are investigating as alleged assault in Blackhall on Sunday that left two women and a man in hospital.

While two youths have been charged over a firearm incident in Ardleigh Park last Monday.

The Fine Gael rep believes there's an upsurge in violent crimes in the area.

He says although the Gardaí are making arrests the judicial system is the wider problem.

Councillor Duncan says the prison punishment process needs to be reviewed:
