The lack of housing is continuing to prevent first-time home buyers from entering the market.

The latest REA average house price index shows the current sale price of a three-bed semi-detached house rose by 0.6% nationwide, in the first three months of this year.

The average price of a home in the midlands has remained stagnant since last quarter, and will cost €260,000 in Westmeath, €255,000 in Laois and €215,000 in Offaly.

Seamus Browne of REA Auctioneers in Portlaoise, says while the supply of new homes in the region is generally good, there's a large cost discrepancy between new and second hand houses:
