Fine Gael Councillor Conor Bergin feels that plans need to be submitted to the OPW on Castletown Bridge.

Progress on the upgrade works for a Laois bridge needs to be submitted to the Office of Public Works urgently.

That's according to Fine Gael Councillor Conor Bergin, who's urging the local authority to put in plans for Castletown Bridge

He says the historic bridge isn't functioning as it should as three of its six arches are blocked.

He feels the local authority should collaborate with the local Tidy Towns group on the plans, which include installing a new sluice gate, removing silt and scouring the arches.

He's urging Laois County Council to complete their environmental assessment and submit the application to An Bord Pleanala and secure the funding with the Office of Public Works.

He says the issue has been on the agenda and he raised it last December.

Castletown Bridge is a six-arch limestone structure crossing the River Nore.

It was built in 1750.

Councillor Bergin believes there are broader environmental issues at stake, including land drainage.

The issue was raised at this month's meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.

He's hoping there will be progress on it soon and he says he's going to keep the pressure on the local authority as the bridge holds a significant impact for the county:
