Mountmellick's Sarah Dooley is a mother of four boys, two of whom, John and Patrick, are autistic and non-verbal, while her son Cathal has been undergoing treatment for leukaemia for the past three years.
Family Carers Ireland says she's being recognised for her tireless campaigning for school places while putting her career on hold to work as a full time carer for her children.
Meanwhile 16 year old Shannon Egan from Athlone has won Leinster Young Carer of the Year.
The Westmeath teenager cares for her sister Alanna who has Koolen de Vries Syndrome and requires daily assistance.
